Save your first device

1. Open the Vault tab and choose Add device.
2. Enter a name and choose its home or room. Choose HomeKit for an eight-digit HomeKit code, or Other for another credential format.
3. Type the code or scan it on supported hardware, then save.
4. Open the device to reveal its code, edit details or add attachments.

A device imported from Apple Home may have no code yet. Open Edit to add one later. Importing does not alter or pair accessories.

Back up before changing your phone

The local vault is encrypted with a key that stays on that device. It is excluded from device backup because that key cannot migrate. Do not rely on an ordinary iPhone backup to recover this vault.

1. In Settings, choose Export vault and save the JSON file somewhere private, or use iCloud sync.
2. Check that the export was saved or that sync completed before resetting or replacing the device.
3. On the new device, use Restore backup or connect to the same iCloud vault.

JSON exports are unencrypted. Anyone who can open one can read its codes and attachments. You control the copies you save or send.

Restore and conflicts

Merge adds new records and skips identical ones. A differing record with the same identity stops the merge so you can make a deliberate choice. Replace removes the current vault contents and uses the backup instead. Export the current vault first if you might need it.

iCloud and shared vaults

Sign in to an Apple Account on your device and enable iCloud. Sync is manual: open Settings → iCloud & family sharing and use Sync after edits. If copies have both changed, save a backup and review the conflict before selecting a copy.

Family vault invitations are separate from sharing the App Store purchase. Each participant needs Family access. Joining an invitation replaces the local vault after confirmation. Read-only participants can view the shared vault; CloudKit prevents them from uploading edits.

Family purchase and restore

Family is a non-consumable, one-time purchase. Use Settings → Family upgrade & restore → Restore purchases with the Apple Account that has access to the purchase. Apple manages payments, refunds and purchase sharing. If Family access is revoked, existing records remain readable.

Camera, HomeKit and app lock

Enable the relevant permission in iOS Settings if scanning or importing is unavailable. Scanning depends on supported camera hardware; manual entry remains available. The app lock uses Apple device authentication, including a passcode fallback. The app never receives your biometric data or device passcode.

Storage limits

Each attachment can be up to 10 MiB. The entire encoded vault can be up to 45 MiB. Remove unnecessary attachments or use smaller files if the vault reaches the limit. Family provides unlimited device records within that storage limit.

Removing information

Delete a device to remove its saved credentials and attachments from the local vault. Sync the updated vault if you want those deletions reflected in iCloud. Exports and copies held by other people must be removed separately. Manage stored iCloud data through Apple’s iCloud storage controls where available.
